Mr. Dalyell

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland (1) what action he is taking to increase the number of consultant posts in Scottish hospitals;

(2) what steps he is taking to improve the provision of medical library facilities in all hospitals;

(3) what steps he is taking to promote the representation of junior hospital staff on all hospital and regional committees;

(4) what consideration he is giving to the provision of rented married quarters in or adjacent to hospitals for the families of compulsorily resident doctors;

(5) whether he will consider the provision of free board and lodging for all doctors who are compulsorily resident in hospitals;

(6) what steps he is taking to ensure a minimum off-duty period of 84 hours per week for junior doctors in Scottish hospitals;

(7) whether he will set up a representative body to advise him on the steps to be taken to achieve a secure career structure with integrated post-graduate training for junior doctors in the hospital service.

The forthcoming negotiations with the profession on their "Charter for Hospital Doctors" will provide an opportunity for discussion of these matters.
