§ Mr. Arthur Lewisasked the Secretary of State for Defence whether, to conserve hard currency, he will instruct all those concerned in purchasing for the Forces at home and abroad to buy wherever possible goods of British manufacture, and order Service men to do this so far as their private purchases are concerned.
§ Mr. HealeyWe naturally prefer to buy British goods and, in holding the358W balance between the need to reduce foreign exchange expenditure and to contain defence budgetary expenditure, we shall continue to judge cases as they arise in the light of the prevailing situation. Various means of encouraging British Service men abroad to buy more British goods are under active consideration.
