HC Deb 08 August 1966 vol 733 cc283-4W
Mr. Webster

asked the Minister of Transport if she will give the annual expenditure on the urban road programme referred to in paragraph 50 of Command Paper No. 3057 for each year from 1960, showing the estimates for each year up to 1970.

Mrs. Castle

Separate information about urban road expenditure, as distinct from expenditure on roads generally is not readily available.

Although many trunk road and motorway schemes help to relieve urban traffic congestion, most of the important urban schemes relate to classified roads. The following table gives the Exchequer contribution and the local authorities' expenditure on classified roads in Great Britain for each of the years 1960–61 to 1965–66 with details of the provision in the printed Estimates for Exchequer contributions in 1966–67 and an estimate of the corresponding expenditure by local authorities.

Year From Central Funds From Local Authority Funds Total
£m. £m. £m.
1960–61 21.6 11.7 33.3
1961–62 27.5 13.4 40.9
1962–63 28.7 14.9 43.6
1963–64 37.7 22.4 60.1
1964–65 42.1 26.4 68.5
1965–66 (Provisional) 41.0 25.0 (estimate) 66.0
1966–67 (Provision in estimates) 57.8 28.0(estimate) 85.8

Separate figures for Exchequer contributions and local authority expenditure are not available for later years.
