48. Mr. James Davidson

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if he will hold a referendum in Gibraltar to establish whether it is the wish of the majority of the people of Gibraltar to be granted independence, to remain in free association with the United Kingdom, or to be integrated with the United Kingdom or with Spain.

Mr. Storehouse

I do not believe that any form of referendum would be helpful at present. Adequate arrangements exist for the people of Gibraltar to make their views known through their elected representatives.
