HC Deb 03 August 1966 vol 733 cc122-3W
89. Captain W. Elliot

asked the Minister of Transport if she will arrange for the investigation of the improved safety potential of the new cling rubber type of road vehicle tyre, with a view to making regulations to ensure that, after a specified date, all tyres including commercial tyres, will be made of cling rubber.

Mr. Swingler

The Road Research Laboratory have already investigated the safety properties of tyres using high hysteresis (or "cling") rubber in their treads. Many tyres produced for passenger cars now have such a tread but further developments for commercial tyres has still to take place. It would be premature to consider Regulations requiring the use of such rubber in tyres.
