HC Deb 03 August 1966 vol 733 c138W
120. Mr. Evelyn King

asked the Secretary of State for Commonwealth Relations what instructions were given to the British Military Mission in Ghana as to their conduct during the recent revolution.

Mr. Bottomley

No special instructions were given to the British Joint Services Training Team in Ghana as to its conduct during thecoup d'état in Ghana in February.

The agreement reached in 1962 between the Ghanaian Government and the British Government on the establishment of the Team, states that members of the Team will not take part in hostilities by the armed forces of Ghana, nor without the consent of the British Government in operations of those forces which are concerned with the preservation of peace, with internal security or with the enforcement of law and order. In accordance with the terms of this agreement, the members of the British Joint Services Training Team remained strictly neutral and passive during the coup.
