asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government what steps he proposes to take to speed up the introduction of slum-clearance areas and comprehensive development areas.

The rate at which substandard houses can be dealt with, whether under housing or planning powers, depends on new houses being available for the people living in them. This is one of the reasons why my right hon. Friend is determined to expand the public sector housing programme.

The various procedures involved are continually under review and he is speeding them up wherever possible.
