HC Deb 23 November 1965 vol 721 cc40-1W
Mr. Monro

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he will take steps to see that employment is available, near their homes, for miners who are made redundant by pit closures.

Mr. Jay

I understand that a large proportion of the men affected by pit closures will be offered jobs by the National Coal Board in other coal mines most of which are within daily travelling distance. As I informed my hon. Friend the Member for Fife, West (Mr. William Hamilton) on 18th November, the Government are taking vigorous action, including the building of advance factories and the scheduling of wider areas as Development Districts, to provide other employment in areas of need.
