HL Deb 18 November 1965 vol 270 c776WA
THE EARL OF KINNOULL

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they are studying the possibility of improving the load gauge of selected routes of British Railways to permit the circulation of European-sized vehicles and piggyback (road on rail) services as referred to in an article in the Railway Gazette for November 20, 1964, and subsequently.

LORD LINDGREN

This is a matter for the Railways Board, who have made no investment proposals to my right honourable friend on these lines. I understand that any extensive use of Continental gauge stock in this country would require very heavy expenditure, which is not the case if container services and the present fleet of special "ferry-type" rolling stock are used for rail traffic to the Continent.

House adjourned at twenty-nine minutes past seven o'clock.
