asked the President of the Board of Trade if he will take steps to encourage the promotion of suitable industrial mergers.

The National Plan makes it clear that it is the Government's policy to assist in the promotion of industrial mergers where these will help increase competitive efficiency.

At the same time, it is a purpose of the Monopolies and Mergers Act, 1965, to safeguard the public interest against mergers which might be harmful to it.
