Mr. William Hamilton

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will enumerate the services provided free to farmers by his Department; and if he will give details of the cost in each of the last five years.

Mr. Ross

The services provided to farmers by the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries for Scotland or by grant-aided bodies are set out in full in the Department's Annual Report presented to Parliament, but I append a note of the cost over the last five years of the grant-aided research and advisory services which are the major free items.

The Department itself carries out a variety of advisory and demonstrational activities in the interest of improving
