§ Dr. Summerskillasked the Minister of Housing and Local Government whether he will introduce legislation to prevent the contamination of the air by organic chemical solvents which are the byproducts of certain manufacturing processes.
§ Mr. MellishThe Alkali, etc. Works Regulation Act, 1906, enables the Chief Alkali Inspector to control emissions of listed noxious gases, including organic chemical solvents, from works scheduled under the Act; and the Public Health Act, 1936, enables local authorities to deal with emissions likely to prejudice health or cause a nuisance. My right hon. Friend sees no need for additional legislation.
