HC Deb 04 May 1965 vol 711 cc151-2W
Mr. Rowland

asked the Minister of Aviation if he will arrange for a demonstration of supersonic bangs to be held over a large provincial city.

Mr. Roy Jenkins

I am considering what further tests might be carried out to improve out knowledge in this field. I do not regard the tests at Upwood as being conclusive one way or the other.

Mr. Rowland

asked the Minister of Aviation what information he has about how the volume of noise generated by aircraft flying at supersonic speeds compares at ground level in the open with that of motor cycles travelling on the public highway.

Mr. Roy Jenkins

A direct comparison by measurement of these two different types of noise is difficult, but such information as we have about subjective reaction indicates that motor cycle noise is more disturbing than sonic bangs of the intensities heard recently at the demonstration at Upwood.
