HC Deb 04 May 1965 vol 711 cc152-3W
Mr. Kershaw

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies how many cases of premature retirement from the colonial service there have been in each of the last five years for reasons of constitutional change in the territory concerned; how many such retirements involved officers with more than 10 years' service; and what was the average rate of compensation paid.

Mr. Greenwood

These are the premature retirements during the last 5 years for reasons of constitutional change:

1960 1961 1962 1963 1964
394 716 2,062 1,736 2,151

I regret that no information is readily available about the number of these officers who retired with more than ten years service. There is also no reliable information about the average amount of compensation received since the compensation schemes under which these officers retire are administered by the overseas governments concerned, and the British Government has not contributed to all of them.

Mr. Kershaw

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies how many cases of premature retirement from the colonial service there have been in each of the last five years for reasons other than a constitutional change in the territory concerned; how many such retirements involved officers with more than 10 years' service; and what was the average rate of compensation paid.

Mr. Greenwood

These are the premature retirements during the past 5 years for reasons other than constitutional change:

1960 1961 1962 1963 1964
Total 287 235 189 132 125
Number of these with more than 10 years' service 280 228 187 129 119

No lump sum compensation was paid in any of these cases since it is payable only to officers retiring because of constitutional change.
