HC Deb 09 March 1965 vol 708 cc72-3W
Mrs. Jeger

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether, in view of recent coroners' findings that the use of the drug phenacetin was a contributory cause of death, he will seek to prohibit the advertisement and sale without a doctor's prescription of preparations containing phenacetin.

Sir F. Soskice

I have no evidence of such widespread abuse of phenacetin as to justify my bringing the matter to the attention of the Poisons Board, which advises me on such matters. I shall, of course, be very ready to consider any representations about the possible need to control the sale of the substance which may be made to me.
