Galpernasked the Secretary of State for Scotland what was the cost to public funds of legal aid and advice in Scotland in 1960, 1961, 1962, 1963 and 1964, respectively; how many persons were involved; and to what extent he estimates that the cost from public funds will continue to rise.
§ Mr. RossThe following table shows in respect of the last five financial years:
- (a) grants to the Legal Aid (Scotland) Fund;
- (b) number of applications granted and legal aid certificates issued for civil proceedings (Section 1 of the Legal Aid (Scotland) Act, 1949):
- (c) number of applications granted and legal aid certificates issued (Section 5 of the 1949 Act—matters not involving litigation);
- (d) number of fees paid to solicitors for legal advice given under the Legal Advice (Scotland) Scheme, 1959.
expected to be completed by the end of this year. No starting date has yet been fixed for the second stage of this project.
