Mr. Huntasked the Minister of Transport what steps he is taking, in view of the unsuitability of limestone 28W aggregates for the construction of trunk roads and motorways, to ensure adequate supplies of suitable aggregates, particularly in the limestone areas, to meet the requirements of the Government road construction programme.
§ Mr. Tom FraserSuitable local materials are used as fully as possible in road construction. Limestone is used widely for some purposes, but is generally unsuitable as a surfacing material for roads carrying heavy traffic. The prime responsibility for a particular scheme rests with the contractor. My Department co-operates closely with the producers' trade associations and the Federation of Civil Engineering Contractors. I am not aware of any difficulties in the provision of suitable materials.
