HC Deb 04 March 1965 vol 707 cc278-9W
45. Commander Courtney

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he is still considering the Vulcain type of nuclear reactor incorporating spectral shift as suitable for installation in a prototype nuclear-powered merchant ship; if, as a result of the delay in this project, he will institute discussions with the Secretary of State for Defence with a view to co-ordinating the civil investigation with the naval requirement for nuclear-powered surface ships; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. McMaster

asked the President of the Board of Trade what Her Majesty's Government's plans now are for the construction in Great Britain of an atomicpowered ship.

Mr. Mason

The hon. Members will be aware that the Government have the nuclear ship project under review. If a decision is taken to go ahead, the Vulcain is one of the two designs from which, as recommended by the Padmore Committee, a choice will be made. As to naval and civil requirements, I shall keep in touch with my hon. Friend the Minister of Defence (Royal Navy) who assured the hon. Member for Haltemprice (Mr. Wall) on 8th February that he would be considering the military possibilities with his colleagues.
