HC Deb 04 March 1965 vol 707 c291W
Mr. Ron Lewis

asked the President of the Board of Trade (1) if he is now satisfied, following his recent visit to Carlisle, that the area is in need of development; and what further steps are required to reinforce the need for an Industrial Development Certificate for large new industry;

(2) What steps he proposes to take to bring new industry into the area of Carlisle; and to what extent he expects regional planning to offset migration.

Mr. Jay

Subject to the priority that must be given to the development districts, where the need is greater, I shall continue to give sympathetic consideration to industrial projects for Carlisle.

In so far as migration is due to a lack of employment, it is being countered by the attraction of industry to the areas mainly affected.
