HC Deb 02 March 1965 vol 707 c207W
60. Sir C. Taylor

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the present-day value in sterling of the dollar and other foreign currency securities which were surrendered by private individuals and companies to Her Majesty's Government during the last war and are still held by Her Majesty's Treasury; what the value of these securities was at the time of surrender; and what is the amount of annual income they produce.

Mr. Callaghan

About £445 million. The annual income is around 40 million dollars. It has never been the practice to disclose details of the transactions of the Exchange Equalisation Account, which holds these securities, but it is of course a fact that, like any portfolio of equities, their value has appreciated substantially since they were purchased.
