HC Deb 30 June 1965 vol 715 c101W
Sir Knox Cunningham

asked the Minister of Aviation why people were refused admission to London Airport when the Beatles were flying to Europe; by what authority this action was taken; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Roy Jenkins

No one was refused admission to London Airport on 20th June when the Beatles flew to Europe. I assume that the hon. and learned Gentleman has in mind the fact that the Roof Gardens over the Queen's Building were closed at the time.

The Beatles travelled through the airport before the time at which the spectators' terraces are usually opened. As their aircraft departed from a stand some distance from the Roof Gardens and no advantage would have been gained from the use of the terraces it was decided not to advance the opening time, as is done when the departing aeroplane is close to the building.
