Mr. Mahonasked the Minister of Labour what steps he is taking to remove the system of casual employment from the construction industry; and what negotiations are now taking place toward this end.
§ Mr. GunterThe Redundancy Payments Bill is designed to encourage the negotiation of agreed schemes in industries where changes of job are frequent under which redundancy compensation may be related to service in the industry, or with a group of employers. I hope the effect of this will be to encourage more regular employment, and I intend to seek discussions with employers and unions in the construction industry on the relevant provisions of the Bill before it comes into force.
