HC Deb 04 June 1965 vol 713 cc278-9W
Mr. Russell Johnston

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether he is aware that Mrs. Jean Owens, formerly employed as an untrained teacher at Chantry Infants' School, Luton, has left teaching because she can receive more from National Assistance than she can earn in teaching; how many similar cases have been officially reported to him; and what action he proposes to take to deal with this problem.

Mr. Crosland

I am aware of this, though no other similar cases have been brought to my notice. Mrs. Owens was properly paid on the statutory scale for a full-time unqualified temporary teacher. It is for the Burnham Committee to revise these scales which may be increased following the current reconsideration of teachers' salaries.
