HC Deb 04 June 1965 vol 713 cc290-1W
Mr. Rose

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government how many houses in Manchester are without baths, inside toilets and hot water; and how these figures compare with the national figures.

Mr. Mellish

The latest complete information is derived from the 1961 Census Returns. These show that 54,577 houses (26.92 per cent.) were without fixed baths and 39,915 houses (19.69 per cent.) were without a hot water tap. These figures compare with national average figures of 22 per cent. and 21.9 per cent. respectively. Since 1961 some 10,685 unfit houses have been demolished or closed, most of which will have lacked baths and hot water taps, and it is estimated that baths have been installed in 206 houses and hot water systems in 203 houses with the aid of standard improvement grants. It is not known how many baths and hot water taps have been installed without grant.

The Census Returns do not show how many houses are without inside water closets and the figures are not otherwise obtainable.
