asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer it he will make a statement, supported by detailed statistical information, showing what progress has been made since October, 1964, in solving the balance of payments problem.

Up to June, the trade deficit this year has been little more than half the rate last year. In the first quarter of 1965, the deficit on current and long-term capital transactions fell to £97 million, which is about half the rate in the previous quarter. Details were given in the tables and commentary published in the June issue ofEconomic Trends, a copy of which is in the Library.
