HL Deb 20 July 1965 vol 268 cc715-6WA
LORD WILLIS

asked Her Majesty's Government:

  1. (a) How many cars are provided for use when on official duty for persons, including Ministers, employed by the Defence Ministry and what is the status of the persons entitled to their use?
  2. (b) How many cars are provided for the Junior Ministers' car pool?

LORD SHACKLETON

The Ministry of Defence has 75 official cars at its disposal, of which a small number are allocated to Ministers and very senior officers and officials. The remainder form a pool available for general use, with priority given to the requirements of senior officers. Usage is determined by the need to enable officials to do their work efficiently and economically, rather than by rank.

The answer to the second part of the Question is 12, but, in addition, Junior Ministers are entitled to call on the general resources of the Government Car Service.

House adjourned at nineteen minutes past seven o'clock.
