§ Mr. Shepherdasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many serving policemen during the past four years have been sent to university whilst remaining on the strength of the force; and to what extent it is his policy to encourage police authorities to improve standards in this way.
§ Mr. George ThomasThree police officers who had attended the Special Course at the Police College are reading for degrees in Law at University College, London, under arrangements made with the College authorities. These arrangements are to be continued and expanded this year. My right hon. and learned Friend is aware of two police officers, from the Durham and Lancashire forces, who have been granted unpaid leave by their police authorities to attend the London School of Economics and the Lancaster University respectively. He is considering whether further guidance in this matter is required.
