HC Deb 05 July 1965 vol 715 c181W
Mr. Armstrong

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will make a statement on the future location of the Chelsea College of Science and Technology.

Mr. Crosland

Yes. The College Governors and the Hertfordshire County Council made a joint proposal that the College should form the nucleus of a major technological university in Hertfordshire. A great deal of careful thought was devoted to the preparation of this scheme, and therefore it is with regret that I have concluded that the College should remain in Chelsea.

I reached this decision after considering the advice of the University Grants Committee, and in the light of their appreciation of the pattern of university development, and the need to employ as fruitfully as possible the resources available for expanding technological education and research.
