Mr. Dodds

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government how many sites for gypsies and other travellers have been set up and are operating in England and Wales by local authorities since the issue of the circular by his department in February, 1962; where is each site situated; and what is the maximum number of caravans allowed on each site.

Mr. MacColl

Since February, 1962, five sites have been established by local authorities in England with the following permitted numbers of caravans—

Eton Rural District (Buckinghamshire) 32
Whitehaven Borough (Cumberland) 12
Hatfield Rural District (Hertfordshire) 30
Strood Rural District (Kent) 12
Bridgwater Rural District (Somerset) 30

In addition, 14 prefabricated bungalows have been provided on a site in Ringwood and Fordingbridge rural district in Hampshire.

I am informed by my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Wales that one site has been established in the Principality in Llanelly Borough with accommodation for 24 caravans.

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government what is the number of sites operated by local authorities in Kent for gypsies and other travellers; where each site is situated; and how many caravans are permitted.

Mr. MacColl

The following sites are now operated by local authorities in Kent:

  • Great Chart (West Ashford Rural District);
  • Cuxton Brickfields (Strood Rural District);

12 caravans are permitted on each site.

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Govrenment how many additional sites in Kent operated by local authorities for gypsies and other travellers are likely to be available by 1st January, 1966; and in which areas.

The following three additional sites are likely to be available in Kent by the beginning of next year:

  • Water Lane, Kingwood, Ulcombe (Holing-bourne Rural District);
  • Stile Bridge Lane, Maiden (Maidstone Rural District);
  • Hever Road, Edenbridge (Sevenoaks Rural District).
