§ 88. Sir C. Osborneasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how much he estimates the present hire-purchase debt of £1,115 million can be allowed to grow without defeating his policy of price stability; what action he is taking on the Governor of the Bank of England's advice to curb domestic spending; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. CallaghanThe growth of hire-purchase debt is kept under review along with other indicators in the credit field, but I could not accept the view that there is any fixed relation between the growth of the debt and the level of prices generally. I have no statement to make today on the level of domestic spending.
