§ 59. Mr. Benceasked the Minister of Overseas Development if she will take measures to promote expansion in the new Commonwealth countries, thus enabling British subjects in those countries to find suitable employment.
§ Mrs. CastleThe main object of our overseas aid programme is to promote economic expansion in Commonwealth and other developing countries. This will, I hope, serve naturally to provide additional employment in these countries.
In the calendar year 1964 we spent £130 million in bilateral capital aid to the developing Commonwealth countries—over five-sixths of our total bilateral capital aid. A large part of our technical assistance and our multilateral aid also benefits the Commonwealth.
