HC Deb 09 February 1965 vol 706 c78W
Mr. Newens

asked the Minister of Transport what proposals he has for the improvement of orbital roads in the north-east Metropolitan area, in view of the fact that many residential roads in the localities of Chingford and Waltham Abbey are expected to carry traffic for which they were never designed.

Mr. Tom Fraser

My plans for the improvement of the North Circular Road include schemes already programmed for the junctions with Fore Street, Chingford Road and Woodford New Road, as well as longer term plans for raising it to dual 3-lane carriageway standard throughout. Further out the main orbital route is to be the new "D" Ring Road. The section between A.1 and A.10 to the west of Waltham Cross is included in the current trunk road programme, and preparatory work is in progress. The section to the east of A.10 is not yet programmed, and further survey work will be needed before the line of the road is settled. The link from the "D" ring to the Dartford Tunnel will be provided by part of the North Orbital Road. Of this, the immediate approaches to the Tunnel have been built. The remainder has not yet been programmed.
