HC Deb 04 February 1965 vol 705 cc316-7W
83. Mr. Thorpe

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he will now invite the new United Nations agency dealing with trade and development to set up its headquarters in London.

85. Mr. Dell

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether the Government has invited the Secretariat of the United Nations Trade and Development Board to establish its headquarters in London.

Mr. Jay

It seems likely that the consensus in the United Nations will be that the Secretariat of the new Trade and Development Board should be located in New York or Geneva or divided between the two. This will have advantages in efficiency and economy since it will be able to use the common services of the existing United Nations Secretariat and to work closely with it and with other international organisations in the field of trade and development. But if there were a widespread desire among member countries that this Secretariat should be in London we should, of course, be glad to give it favourable consideration.
