HC Deb 22 December 1965 vol 722 cc442-3W
Captain Kerby

asked the Secretary of State for Defence how many ships and of what types are projected, ordered or under construction for the Royal Fleet Auxiliary Service; and how many of these have already been launched.

Mr. Mayhew

The following ships are at present on order for the Royal Fleet Auxiliary Service:

  • 3 Stores Support Ships.
  • 2 Fleet Replenishment Ships.
  • 1 Fleet Replenishment Tanker.
  • 1 Helicopter Support Ship.

The Fleet replenishment tanker has been launched; one of the stores support ships has not yet been laid down.

The size and shape of the new construction programme for the Royal Fleet Auxiliary Service is dependent on the outcome of the Defence Review.

Captain Kerby

asked the Secretary of State for Defence which ships planned for the Royal Fleet Auxiliary Service have been cancelled during the past year; and what stage of construction they had reached.

Mr. Mayhew

No ships planned for the Royal Fleet Auxiliary Service have been cancelled during the past year.

Captain Kerby

asked the Secretary of State for Defence if he will state the value of Royal Fleet Auxiliaries completed during the past three years and the value of orders placed with shipyards during the past 18 months for such ships.

Mr. Mayhew

Royal Fleet Auxiliaries to the value of £12.64 million have been completed during the past three years. The value of orders placed with shipyards during the past 18 months is a matter of commercial confidence between the Ministry and the shipbuilder.
