§ 41. Sir H. Harrisonasked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what is the cost of maintaining the consulate at Recife, Brazil; and whether it is of benefit to Great Britain's export trade.
§ Mr. PadleyThe cost of maintaining Her Majesty's consulate at Recife, Brazil, during the twelve months ending 30th June, 1965, was £10,773.
It is impossible to assess with precision the benefit to our export trade of an individual consulate, which must be regarded rather as a member of a team comprising the embassy and its subordinate consular posts. In the past few years, however, considerable quantities of jute mill and textile machinery, to a total value of at least £650,000 have been exported to the north and north-east of Brazil.
