27. Mr. Gresham Cookeasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how much his Department has spent on teaching machines in the last year; and how much it will spend in the future.
§ Mr. PrenticeTeaching machines are used mainly by local education authorities, who are responsible for buying their own equipment. There are at least 73 authorities who are making use of programmed learning in varying degrees. The Department's audio-visual unit has 13 machines for display and demonstration purposes. Approximately £19 was spent last year on one machine and two programmes for that unit and several more machines may be bought next year for the training of staff.
