HC Deb 04 August 1965 vol 717 c356W
Mr. Gregory

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what is his policy on establishing representative institutions and for national independence in British Guiana; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Greenwood

The British Guiana Legislature, to which the Government are responsible in all internal matters, is wholly elected by universal adult suffrage. The Commonwealth team of observers has confirmed that the last election reflected the political conviction of the Guianese electorate. As I informed the hon. and gallant Member for Worcestershire, South (Sir P. Agnew) on 15th July, it is planned to hold a conference beginning on 2nd November at which one task will be to fix the date of independence.
