§ 36. Mr. John Wellsasked the Minister of Housing and Local Government which county authorities have established camp sites for gypsies and travellers; how many sites have been established or are under establishment; and what steps he is taking to encourage other local authorities to establish such camps so that an unfair burden is not placed on the ratepayers in the more active councils by virtue of a sudden influx of travellers from other counties.
§ Mr. CrossmanIn England 13 such sites have been established by local authorities in the counties of:
268WBuckingham, Hertford, Kent, Leicester, Nottingham, Surrey, Southampton, Warwick, Worcester.
Eleven others are in process of establishment, and about twenty more are under consideration.
I am informed by my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Wales that one site has been established in the county of Carmarthen. My information about sites is still incomplete. I shall consider future policy when the survey is completed.
