§ 57. Sir B. Jannerasked the Minister of Transport whether he is aware that a fatal accident occurred to a passenger on a scooter in Leicestershire recently owing to the reflector posts on the road being covered in mud; and what steps he proposes to take to ensure that road signs are kept clean.

The responsibility for the maintenance of traffic signs rests with the appropriate highway authority, which in this case is the Leicestershire County Council. I understand its attention has been drawn to this matter. The Traffic Signs Manual being issued by my Department will emphasise the need for the regular cleaning of signs.
