HC Deb 14 April 1965 vol 710 c196W
39. Mr. Monro

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he will, in the public interest, give a general direction to the South of Scotland Electricity Board to charge landladies who have accommodation for tourists at the domestic tariff.

Dr. Dickson Mahon

No. The fixing of tariffs is a matter entirely for the Board, and my right hon. Friend has no authority to intervene.

Mr. Brewis

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he is aware that the tariff of the South of Scotland Electricity Board discriminates unfairly between those who advertise tourist accommodation and those who do not and thereby affects the Scottish tourist industry deleteriously; and if he will, in the public interest, issue a general direction ending this discrimination.

Mr. Ross

No such distinction is drawn in the Board's tariff, which makes it clear that only premises used exclusively as a private dwelling-house can be supplied at the domestic rate. The fixing of tariffs is, however, a matter for the Board and I have no authority to intervene.
