HC Deb 14 April 1965 vol 710 c208W
Mr. Adam Hunter

asked the Minister of Health what improvement in the working of the National Assistance Act, 1948, has been achieved by the passing of the National Assistance Act, 1948 (Amendment) Act, 1962; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. K. Robinson

Since the passing of the National Assistance Act, 1948 (Amendment) Act, 1962, local authorities have made considerable use of their powers under that Act to provide, or to assist voluntary agencies in providing, services for old people. These include meals on wheels for those who are homebound; meals in clubs and centres for those who can get about; clubs, centres and occupational workshops; and holidays, transport and social events. My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Scotland and I recognise the need for further expansion of these services, which vary in extent from area to area, and will keep the position under review.
