§ Captain Kerbyasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many golden sovereigns were produced during the mintage year 1964; how many are in circulation in the United Kingdom; how many have been sold abroad, and at what price per sovereign; and what is the purpose in producing these coins.
§ Mr. MacDermotNo sovereigns were minted in 1964. New sovereigns go to augment the stock in the nation's gold reserves, from which they are released as necessary to meet overseas demand, which would otherwise be met by counterfeiters. They are sold at the current market price. It is not the practice to disclose the number. Sovereigns do not circulate in the United Kingdom.
