§ 60. Mr. Alldrittasked the Minister of Transport (1) if, having regard to the fact that 186 persons were killed or injured in the three years ending 15th March, 1965, on Scotland Road, Liverpool, between Mile End and Boundary Street, he will direct that action should be taken to expedite the proposed subway;
(2) having regard to the accident rate on a short length of Scotland Road, Liverpool, between Mile End and Boundary Street, if he will allow the local authority to introduce new methods of preventing accidents on this road.
§ Mr. Tom FraserA subway at this point would be very expensive and many pedestrians would probably continue to cross the road on the surface unless the central reservation were made continuous —which would create problems for right-turning traffic. The city council is considering, in consultation with my divisional road engineer, whether pushbutton pedestrian-operated linked traffic signals might not be a more effective safety measure.
I have not felt able to agree to the installation of floodlighting at the pedestrian crossings in Scotland Road or to the painting of a safety legend on the footpaths near them. But I remain willing to consider any other new ideas for improving safety here which the council may put to me.
