Mr. loan L. Evansasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what progress has been made in establishing 291W a National Documentation Centre for programmed learning at Birmingham University for research on the development of teaching machines; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. CroslandThe University of Birmingham has accepted my invitation to establish a Research and Documentation Centre for programmed learning. The Centre will be set up in the University's Department of Education, under the direction of Professor E. A. Peel, and is expected to start work in October next. It will receive an annual grant from my Department.
The Centre will have responsibility for co-ordinating research and development in programmed learning, and for collecting and disseminating information about such research within the educational system in England and Wales.
My Department will shortly be writing to local education authorities, Institutes of Education, and other interested parties.
