HC Deb 17 November 1964 vol 702 cc28-9W
59. Mr. Orme

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government what plans he has regarding the provision of a new town in Cheshire to alleviate the serious housing shortage and lack of suitable building land in Salford and Manchester.

Mr. MacColl

My right hon. Friend's predecessor proposed to designate a new town site for this purpose near Risley in Lancashire, and my right hon. Friend is now looking at this.

Quite apart from the question of a new town, the Department are at present consulting both Manchester Corporation and Cheshire County Council on the possibility of more sites for overspill in Cheshire. The residual long-term needs of the whole conurbation are being considered in the context of the North-West Study. The possibility of another new town in Cheshire or elsewhere has not been excluded.
