HC Deb 04 November 1964 vol 701 cc1-2W
Sir Alec Douglas-Home

asked the Prime Minister what consideration he has given to making a Government contribution to the Lord Mayor's Kennedy Memorial Appeal; and if he will make a statement.

The Prime Minister

The Lord Mayor's Appeal was inaugurated in May of this year and has been running for almost seven months. With the end of his term of office imminent, the Lord Mayor of London recently reported to the right hon. Gentleman the Leader of the Opposition, when he was Prime Minister, on the progress of the appeal to date. With the agreement of the leaders of all parties, the Lord Mayor was told that, subject to the approval of Parliament, the Government were willing to make a contribution to the appeal to match equally the amount contributed by the public towards the target of £1 million. This undertaking, of course, stands and the necessary Estimate will be presented to the House in due course.
