§ Mr. HoggTotal expenditure by local education authorities in England and Wales on education, excluding school meals and milk, in the period 1945 to 1951 was £1,188 million. Capital expenditure on schools was 6.8 per cent. of this amount. The equivalent figures for the period 1951 to 1964 are £7,786 million and 11.4 per cent. Direct expenditure by the Ministry of Education accounted for a further £111 million in the earlier period and £363 million in the later period.
