§ 81. Mr. A. Lewisasked the Minister of Transport, in view of the growing concern that fares in London should be subsidised to prevent another rise, whether he will take steps to give a subsidy for this purpose to the London Board.
§ Mr. GalbraithWe have no power to give a subsidy to the London Transport Board. Under Section 18 of the Transport Act, 1962, the Board has a statutory duty to pay its way.
§ 85. Lady Gammansasked the Minister of Transport, in view of the recent increase in fares, if he will give a general direction, in the public interest, to the London Transport Board to issue cheap season tickets to all elderly people on small incomes, for use on public transport service from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
§ Mr. GalbraithNo. This is not a suitable subject for a general direction, and it is not, in the Government's view, the right way to help elderly people on small incomes.
