§ 44. Mr. Godman Irvineasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what steps are being taken in the schools in Fiji to encourage the use of the English language.
§ Mr. SandysEnglish is taught as a second language from the first year in school and is usually the medium of instruction from the fifth year. Regular vacation refresher and coaching 29W courses in the teaching of English have been organised, specially prepared teaching aids have been distributed, and broadcast lessons concentrate on the teaching of English. Several teachers have attended British Council courses in this country.
