HC Deb 04 March 1964 vol 690 c220W
Mr. Dempsey

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will publish details showing the total approved teaching establishment in Scotland, the deficit, and the additions to the staffing complement he estimates will be required when the school leaving age is raised.

Mr. Noble

There is no approved teaching establishment in Scotland. As at 7th October, 1963, there were in public and grant-aided schools 41,085 teaching posts of which 3,482 were either unfilled or occupied by uncertificated teachers or re-employed teachers over 70 years of age. On present information it is estimated that some 4,200 additional teachers will be required when the school leaving age is raised.
